Minerals Day at Imerys Technology Centre

October 2, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

On 2nd October Imerys will be hosting students from the local college at their Imerys Technology Centre- UK (ITC-UK).
The students are currently studying for their A levels in physics and chemistry and have been given the opportunity to have some hands-on experience of life in a busy materials science laboratory.
The ITC-UK is located in St. Austell, Cornwall, where the extraction of high quality kaolin has been a significant industry for over 100 years.
After their safety induction the students will firstly be able to learn how Imerys tests its kaolins for specific ceramic properties, allowing the ceramic materials to be shipped across the globe.  They will then look into the microscopic world of minerals, using the advanced techniques of scanning electron microscopy and polarised, stereo light microscopy.  Returning to the processing of kaolins, they will be able to use their knowledge of science to modify the rheology of slurries during the manufacturing process.  Finally the group will look at some of the applications for which minerals are used and make paints and test for important visual properties.
In inviting the young people from St. Austell college to the ITC-UK Imerys seeks to encourage them to look for further studies and careers in applied science.  And, even better, in the fascinating world of minerals.
